TPS Re-Registration for Syrians Begins
Yesterday, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that the re-registration period for Syrians with Temporary Protected Status is now open. Syrian nationals who wish to extend their Temporary Protected Status through September 30, 2019, will have to make sure they re-register between March 5, 2018, and May 4, 2018. It is also important to note that individuals who choose to re-register will also have to renew their employment authorization documentation if they intend to keep their job during the extension period. The USCIS recognizes that processing time may take a few weeks so they have automatically extended employment authorization documentation that expires on March 31 until September 27. It is still important to make sure to re-apply for employment authorization documents for the extension through September 30, 2019.
The only individuals who are eligible for Temporary Protected Status designated for Syria must meet the following qualifications:
- They must have continuously lived in the United States since August 1, 2016
- They must have been continuously present in the United States since October 1, 2016
The Department of Homeland Security announced the Syrian TPS extension on January 31 after assessing the conditions that are still present in Syria. If you have questions about Temporary Protected Status, contact our firm today.
