How can I determine employment eligibility?

One question that many people have is whether their immigration status or visa status allows them to be eligible to obtain employment in the United States. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services has established an online program known as SelfCheck that allows individuals to enter information and find out whether they are eligible to obtain employment. The process to do so is as follows:

  • First, SelfCheck will require you to provide basic information such as your name, date of birth, address and Social Security number.
  • After you enter that information, it will be sent from SelfCheck to a third party that generates a quiz to confirm your identity. This quiz is similar to one that would be given by a bank to confirm your identity. It includes questions that only you would be able to answer. Keep in mind that the quiz is timed and that if time runs out, you may not be able to verify your identity.
  • After your identity has been confirmed and established, you will provide other information that may include immigration documentation such as a green card or an employment authorization card. This information allows SelfCheck to determine the results.
  • SelfCheck will assess the information you have provided in previous steps and compare it to government records. If mismatched information shows up, you will be directed as to how you can fix it.
